Year 7 Camp

The year sevens went on to vertical horizons last week. The story below was written Danielle

Camp

As I tightened my harness. Strap by strap. I pulled it up as high as I could go. Click! My helmet was ready.
The lady checked my harness.

I stood on my mark. I was all set and ready to go.
My eyes glanced up. The sun was shinny down into my eyes. Clouds were wandering around the sky. Nervously I walked to the first pole

“Danielle are you ready, YES” I replied to the instructor. “ Team are u ready, YES” They all shouted back. “Danielle run, team pull, team stop” Suddenly I was up in the air. It all happened so quickly. I was dangling from high above. Spinning around and around.

I performed heaps of tricks. I was swimming and running in mid air. I stuck my hand out and stretched my legs. I was superman. I was slowly lowered down to the ground and made my way to the next pole. I did the same thing once again.

I loved every bit. It was the best camp ever.

Room 1 Science Display

Science Day

On the 16th of September our school had a science fair. All of the classes made their own
displays, which we hung up or placed somewhere in the assembly hall. Everyone had different
topics for their displays, that were based on something to do with science. Some of the topics
that the students did were... Static Electricity, Germ Testing, The Periodic Table and many more.
Thanks to Kaiah for the post!

Procedural Writing

This week In Room 1 for writing we have started our Procedural writing. Brylee and Zekiel completed a piece of writing on how to Putt a golf ball.

Title: Fore
Goal: How to putt in golf
Materials/Equipment: putter, golf ball, green

  1. Take the flag out of the hole
  2. Then walk around the green to look at the different angles
  3. Next walk the line of the ball(between the ball and the hole)
  4. Now line the ball up, this is where you visualise where the ball will go after you hit it
  5. Twist the ball on the spot, this allows you to line the writing on the ball up with the hole
  6. Go get your putter
  7. Stand back and have a practise swing
  8. Meanwhile you can approach the ball and put the putter behind the ball
  9. Ensure the ball is between your feet, and the putter is resting on the green behind the ball
  10. Finally your head stays down and use the same practise swing, lift putter back and swing through

Planting Trees

Today the student council planted 5 native trees at school, kindly donated by the Paper 4 Trees programme in conjunction with Shell Todd and Te Kahuri Nurseries.

Paper 4 Trees is a programme that was set up in 2008 to promote recycling in schools. Each class has a grey bin that they collect cardboard and paper in, that is then put in the big blue bins to be recycled. For every 2 cubic metres of paper and cardboard we recycle each year we receive 1 native tree. This is the equivalent to 8 large wheelie bins.

This year we are aiming to recycle 20 cubic metres and have another 10 natives to plant!

Great Writing

During the past few weeks Room1 have been focussing on recounts for their writing. Over the next few weeks we will share some of the recounts that Room 1 students have completed. This is Meg's recount of her trip to Auckland.

No Sound Without Silence

I sat excitedly awaiting their arrival. Watching the clock decline. 3,2,1. A green glow appeared from the side door and out they came surrounded by people carrying colossal green L.E.D's.

Suddenly an ear piercing noise came from the guitars on stage. "I know you're
missing home," Bellowed from the speakers throughout vector arena. Every single person in the crowd jumped up from the velvet seats and started chanting the
chorus. "It's alright cause tonight we gunna paint the town green"

After singing all their number one hits they launched down off the stage and made a mad rush for a small black platform on the border of the mosh pit. They told a story about their first ever song released then sang "Man that can't be moved."

As they belted out the lyrics to "hall of fame" their last song of the night, the whole crowd went ballistic. The night was over, the lights came up and everyone fled.

That was one of the best nights of my life. It was amazing. They are so talented and
I really hope that when they come back the 'Paint the town green.'

Senior Science Experiments

Today we started our science experiments in the senior school. I had Room 2 and we looked at creating a film cannister rocket using an Alka-Seltzer tablet and water. The students were surprised at the reaction caused inside the film cannister. I will not share what happened as I this experiment will be done with all the other senior classrooms.
